Ebrei schiavi e schiavi di ebrei nell’Italia centro-settentrionale in Età medievale e moderna: note di ricerca

Quaderni Storici , 126:699-718.

The topic of the enslavement of Italian Jews in early modern times has been fairly well researched, thanks also to the study of confraternities from different communities that redeemed slaves. Within this already established framework, my paper will focus on some peculiar Italian cases from the end of 15th century and the beginning of 16th, linked both to the “indigenous” piracy and the Jews’ ejection from the Iberian peninsula (1492). Conversely (always focusing on a small number of cases), this paper will focus on the more neglected topic of the trade and the use of slaves by Jews in the Italian peninsula. The paper concludes with some remarks on the subtle boundary, in the Jewish context, between “slavery” and “serfdom”.
