Solidarietà pubblica e riscatto dei cattivi (secc. XIV-XV)

Unpublished.

The ransom of Sicilians captured in corsairing raids caused an economic problem both for their families and the larger community. Notwithstanding its religious connotations, the ransoming system was not initially managed by the Church, but by a royal office through the collection of a public fund aimed at the captives’ redemption and composed of bequeathed legacies and of the revenue of their taxes. The implementation of this system, which changed through time, was characterized by difficulties and obstacles, which derived also by the cities’ request to give priority to the liberation of their own citizens.
