Lo schiavo negro: il fascino dell’esotico nella cultura figurativa tra Cinque e Seicento

Unpublished.

The black slave was, on the one hand, an image of the exotic, a fascinating and unknown world, on the other hand it was the emblem of evil, feared for the analogy that Christianity drew with the Black, the Turk, the unfaithful and their raids and mischief on the Mediterranean costs. 16th and 17th century visual culture represented this double set of symbolic meanings and contributed – purposefully and following the wishes of the “high” purchasers – to elaborate a sort of racial discrimination ahead of time.
