Momenti di vita genovese nella Caffa del Banco di San Giorgio

Atti della Accademia Ligure di Scienze e Lettere, 45:192-204.

Beside other aspects of Genoese life and trade in Caffa in the period between the fall of Constantinople (1453) and the fall of Caffa (1475), the article gives a short commentary on the slave trade.

It stresses that the Ottoman control of the straits led to a considerable decrease in the slave trade from Caffa to Italy. Alternative routes, especially the land route via the Balkans and the Germanic lands, used to avoid the now difficult sea route, proved too dangerous and costly to replace the former sea route permanently.
