In the context of the research project „Slavery in the Later Medieval Mediterranean“ at the Universities of Trier and Jerusalem, supported by the German Israeli Foundation, we will be holding an international and interdisciplinary conference on „Slavery and the Slave Trade in the Eastern Mediterranean, 11th to 15th centuries“ from Monday, 7 to Wednesday, 9 September 2009, in Trier. The thematic range of our conference includes the regions bordering the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea in the 11th to 15th centuries. Possible topics of our common endeavours include the following:

  •  the slave trade – agents, routes, organisation and cooperation
  • slavery/slave trade and religion – theoretical debates, interreligious contacts, polemics
  • slavery/slave trade and the state – war, taxation, legislation
  • slavery/slave trade and social reality – slaves in the societies of the Eastern Mediterranean (similarities, differences, interactions)
